Rainy Day

Everybody’s going to have their slumps.  Whatever you’re into, you’re gonna have a slump.  I had recently slipped into my own slump and wasn’t actually shooting anything new there for a while.  Wasn’t pushing my creativeness at all.  Until I found this rainy-day project.  The hard part wasn’t the slump (it, too, shall pass).  It wasn’t the lighting or the set up.  It wasn’t any of those things.

The hardest part?

Choosing my favorites.

First Responder

I had to call 911 today.  And not the kind of call where you’re driving by an accident well after it’s happened and you call just to make sure they know about it.  I was the actual first responder.  Now, I understand that this kind of thing happens all the time.  I’m not naive.  This is the first time, however, that it’s really ever happened to me.  I’ve seen accidents and been involved in an accident (dislocated my elbow in a wrestling match in high school), but I’ve never actually been the one on the phone with the 911 operator taking instructions until the real first responders arrive.

I didn’t even really realize what was happening at first, but before I knew it I had my phone out and was head-long into a conversation with the operator.  Holy crap!  And all those things I learned in all the first aid/CPR classes I’ve taken came rushing right back (and in the proper order, too).  I was pretty happy about that.

When it was all said and done, though, I had some thoughts on the situation:

  1. All I can think of now is “how is she doing?”
  2. There needs to be a quick-dial emergency option on the iPhone (or any smart phone for that matter).  So many features and apps can be buried inside a smartphone these days so it would be nice to have that option if, and when, you need it.
  3. Perhaps some sort of option for the person who calls 911 so they can decompress afterwards.  There’s no way that the situation I saw today was the worst it gets so I’m sure that some people who call 911 could use someone to talk to afterwards – considering how pumped up I was.
  4. That part in the movies and TV shows where somebody inevitably shouts to the crowd of people “back up, give her some space,” that’s pretty accurate.
  5. How’s she doing?

And there had to be at least somebody on scene who looked up and thought “now who’s that insensitive jerk who’s taking the picture?”  That’s my therapy I suppose.

1,000-Word Essay

No words.  I have no words.  Technically speaking, however, this is a 1,000 word essay, right?

Sharp

“A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that ‘individuality’ is the key to success.”

– Robert Orben

I’m certainly in a position where the saying “use it or lose it” plays a huge factor.  This blog, if anything, is helping me stay sharp and practice my craft.  Every once in a while I get the urge to do something a little “wonky” with my images – just for fun.  Enjoy.

Senioritis

And so it begins.  The last couple of weeks before my daughter is high school senior.  The one thing she’s really looking forward to is the senior cafeteria.  I’ve walked by this space countless number of times and never really knew what it was.  According to my wife (and anybody who attended Handley High School pre-21st Century), this space used to be classrooms.  Hopefully I’ll be allowed to roam through the hallways this summer and shoot more of this building – I’ve always wanted to.

Memorial

A man’s country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers and woods, it is a principle and patriotism is loyalty to that principle.

Alpendorf

Found another image from our trip to Austria.  On our last day, we took a hike up into Alpendorf and we were glad we did.  Just look at that view!  There are no words to describe it.

Long Branch

So this place is really tucked away in Clarke County, VA.  I ride by this place just before riding by the Millwood Mill on Tuesday nights.  I’ve been here once before when I was shooting weddings and haven’t been back since.  Now I want to go inside because apparently there’s an amazing staircase just inside the front entrance (it’s now a goal of mine to shoot it).

Nostalgia

I stumbled across a box today that was just stuffed in a closet.  It had been there for quite some time and I’d acknowledged it for several years and questioned what was in it, but never actually looked inside.  Curiosity got the better of me today and I’m glad it did.  What I found represents about a decade’s worth of memories in my racing “career.”  These awards include Commonwealth State Games of Virginia, Duathlon and Triathlon series in Maryland, Virginia Criterium Championships and countless memories.  Everybody should be so lucky to find a similar box of memories.  Good times…

Lots of fond memories just waiting to be found in my closet today!

Light Session

Alright, gearing up for the senior portraits in the next year.  Took some test shots this afternoon and am pretty happy with them.  I certainly have some improving to do, but this was a good start – I really need a hair light to make this image really pop.  I got a new light diffuser kit just before Apple Blossom – I knew I’d be using it everywhere.  I’ve tried plenty of light diffusers in the past, but none have had very pleasing results.  I’ve made them work for me, but have always known I could do better.  Along comes Gary Fong.  Granted, he’s been around for a while, but I’m just now trying his stuff.  And I’m loving it.  It’s not just the products themselves, but the techniques that I’m learning along with them.  I’m kinda digging portraits and am looking forward to doing more.

Any takers…?

I'm learning so much about light and how to control every bit of it. This was shot in the heat of the day at about 4 o'clock outside with an ugly-looking background. You'd never guess from the final result.

Vendors

I’ve never liked the vendors concept at Apple Blossom – especially the street vendors who roam the parade route with the grocery cart full of goodies that just drive all parents bonkers.  My kids are grown and have almost OUTgrown the stage where they want stuff from those carts.  I’ve never liked the vendors…until now.  You see, the “in” items now all have lights.  Sure there are still plenty of noise makers, but the lighted toys seem to be more popular than ever.  And not just with the kids – I like them, too.  It’s kind of like a pre-fireworks show for me.

Disco Fever

I’ve been in Winchester now for 14 years and have “attended” Apple Blossom each year.  I say “attended” because I’ve really only gone to the parades and the carnival/midway when the kids were younger.  I’ve really never been one for the crowds and all that goes with them, but after tonight I can see why some people go overboard and nuts for all the events.  This doesn’t necessarily mean I’m going to start attending more, but I can appreciate why some people do.  I’ve got so many more photos to rummage through before it’s all said and done, but this one summed up my evening.

Stairway

Another take on the incredible architecture inside the Handley Regional Library in Winchester.  My next project is going to be shooting the inside of Handley High School.  That place has got some architectural awesomeness and I’ve wanted to shoot it forever.  Stay tuned…

Last Supper

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”  Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.  “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.

Mark 14:22-24

Attended my church’s Maundy Thursday service tonight where they performed a “Living Last Supper.”  Certainly an interesting way to present the story.

Palm Sunday

This one is in an effort to be more timely with my photos.  It is, after all, Palm Sunday.

Just Beachy

Proper sunsets are simply awesome.  I shot close to 300 photos before it was all said and done, but this one stood out from the rest.  All the “contrasty” things going on were screaming for some post-processing.  Hopefully gonna turn the other way in several hours and the catch up with the sun.

Composition

“How do they know what they want when they haven’t even seen it?”

– Steve Jobs

Frame your next photograph with this thought in mind – only show them what you want them to see.  It always amazes me to see what goes on behind the scenes of any video shoot.  Any that I’ve done.  Any that I’ve seen.  I can’t watch any video anymore without the production gears in my head spinning out of control.  It’s just fascinating.  The lights, the flags, the reflectors, the people, the gadgets and doodads – all just out of the frame.  But all there to make what is in the frame that much better.  Just fascinating.  And that’s just it – only show them what you want them to see.  So grab a camera and start shooting those extraordinary scenes that may just be smack dab in the middle of a bunch of chaos.  But once you frame all that junk out, you’re left with insanely great images!

This doorknob just stood out to me as unique, but I had to look past all the distractions to really see it.

Happy Accidents

There’s a lot of value in the various “accidents” that are made while editing.  Whether it’s photos or videos, it happens all the time.  The trick to editing, after all, is the feel or the rhythm that you get into while it’s happening.  And as you’re in the zone, you can easily make creative choices on the fly that you didn’t really intend to pursue, but then you sit back and think “Wow, that could really work.”  This happened to me as I was editing today’s image so I figured I’d post both the intended version and the “Happy Accident.”  So play around with your edits and make all those mistakes.  Some of the best products happened from crazy, unintended creative choices.

The Eyes Have It

I revisited this one from a couple of years ago and processed it very differently because there was just something about it that was so intense.  As I got into it I realized that it was the eyes.  Doesn’t it feel like he’s staring into your soul?
