Filters

I know a lot of people aren’t big on the “creative” images full of filters that come off a cell phone these days – me included.  But I’m a real sucker for a photo that has that graphic novel look to it.

I chose to only take my phone to the Christmas parade tonight.  My thinking was that I’ve shot this parade for 6 years now and I always come home with the same shots.  BORING!!  So here’s what I came home with tonight.

Drink Lid

I think Snapple drinks have programmed everybody to look under the lids of their drinks to see what’s under there.  You know you do it.  I’m alway looking under the lid.

I think I got somebody else's drink.

Material

Do you think there’s an American restaurant in Japan where they grill hotdogs and hamburgers and participate in various American idiosyncrasies?  I wonder what those idiosyncrasies would be.  And I wonder where the Japanese restaurants here in the U.S. get their material.  Is there some father somewhere in Japan making onion ring volcanoes for his kids at dinner?  Is there a Japanese mother making beating heart shapes out of rice?  These are things that make me go “hmmmmmmm…”

-40

They say that -40ºC is equal to -40ºF.  Not sure I want to find out first-hand.  -4ºC is cold enough for me.

It's apparently also been proven that -57.6ºF is twice as cold 0ºF. I just know it's cold!

Groupie

We all know what the selfie is by now.  So wouldn’t this be considered a “Groupie?”  A group selfie, right?  Well, that’s what we’re calling it anyway.  And how quickly the concept of a family picture evolves when technology becomes involved.  No need to Photoshop a missing family member in anymore.

This is what you do when a family member is away and you want to include him in the group selfie - aka groupie around our house.

Walkers

I passed this sign as I was walking (aha, see what I did there) to a meeting yesterday from the parking garage in downtown Winchester.  Watch out for walkers tonight (haha, did it again).

How It’s Done

And that, folks, is how it’s done.

This is what they really are.

My Best Camera

I pretty much take my cameras everywhere these days, but there are specific situations where my big cameras won’t work.  Namely, my bike rides.  I have, however, adopted the popular saying among photographers “My best camera is the one I have with me.”  This is actually an iPhoneography book and app, FYI.  I just really want to go back now and shoot this properly.

Rumble

Loads of images to go through.  Long weekend.  Very little sleep.  Horrific road conditions on the way home.  Still had a good time.  Thank goodness for that ingenious invention – the rumble strip.

For the last 40 miles of my trip the rumble strip was the only way I could tell where I was. This is I-66 in VA. Average speed was about 30 miles an hour from Richmond to Winchester!

Who Me?

Well, how about that!

Delicate

My first accessory for every lens - UV filter.

My first accessory for every lens – UV filter.

Folks, if you’re serious about your photography equipment – even if you’re not a photographer by trade, but simply want to protect your gear as best you can – there’s no better investment than the UV filter for your lens.  Any lens.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve got the Canon 1DX, the Nikon D3X, a mirrorless camrea, a point & shoot or a camcorder – there’s almost always a UV filter that will fit your gear.

You don’t want to learn from experience that a simple lens filter could have saved some fairly expensive equipment.

I remember the one time I dropped my camera gear.  We were on vacation and it was a simple camcorder (huge compared to the ones today) hidden deep in a backpack of other “toursity” things.  I heard it fall off the stroller and crack the pavement.  I thought for sure the camera was done for.  The only thing that broke was the UV filter!  It’s now the very first accessory I purchase whenever I get a new lens.

I cringe when I see a lens without one.  That glass is delicate people.  Take care of it.

You don’t want it looking like this.
