Wall Art

I know most people already have their dentist that the go to, but I have to plug the fine folks at Tolly Dental.  Bunch of great folks over there – plus they really like my photography.

Hmmm…

I Took the opportunity to shoot a little bit while I was at The Handley Library this evening.  It’s been a while since I shot there and I’ve been meaning to get back and do it properly.

Sanity

My home office is in the basement and has absolutely no connection to the outside world.  I need to get out every once in a while.  If not to see what the weather is like, at least for my own sanity!

Wedding Selfie

I don’t think I’ve shared this.  I remember posting an image of this incident, but never the full video.  If you pay close attention at about 45 seconds you can see the quad level out (it’s so very subtle) and that was my fatal mistake because it didn’t clear the hill and I still had legal room to climb.  Once the forest starts to appear in the shot it’s not long before it happens, but I end this video before that point.  It won’t take much imagination to figure out what happens next.  A shout-out to my brother and son for heading off after it.  After all that, I still got the shot!

Space Coast

Alright, so here’s the obligatory Spring Break photo…

Come On…

Come on Spring – kinda tired of riding my bike inside all the time.  Need some variety.

…how many of you had a Disney song going through your head just now?  Just curious.

Check out the pattern that the freezing rain made.  Fascinating.

Barrier to Entry

Heavenly

Some eye candy before I start my rant… | Order a print of this image.

I have a tough job.

Yeah, yeah.  I know what some of you might be thinking…”hold up, you work at home.  How hard can that be?!!”  Not talking about that part – I actually think that part’s awesome.  I love my job.  The tough part is that I’m in an industry where there is no real barrier to entry.

Every single person who walks into Best Buy (or navigates to B&H Photo or Amazon) right now can walk out with a camera (even a drone these days) and a turnkey system that does what I do (for the most part).  No real barrier to entry.  There’s no test.  No certification.  No actual degree needed.  All of credentials set you apart and certainly improve the chances that you’ll actually make it, but it’s not required to call yourself a photographer or video producer.

Therein lies the issue.  I have to co-exist with everybody these days, because everybody is a photographer.  Everybody is a video editor/producer.  I’m not trying to rain on anybody’s parade.  You can actually become a decent photographer/video producer without a degree, but you have to work really hard at it, maintain it and even then not everybody can do it well.  I’ve got a long way to go and I’d loathe myself if I ever thought I knew it all.  Heck, even the major players (networks and production houses) make continuity mistakes and bad decisions in their productions.

I’ll just continue to try to stand out from the rest and have faith that my potential clients will know the difference and make good choices when it comes to production quality.

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

Gone?

For as much snow as we got a couple weeks ago, it’s pretty crazy how little I’m seeing when I look out my window.  Well, even though there’s little to no evidence left, I still have photographic proof that it happened.

20160124-IMG_5915

Granted, this is a sporty-looking 4-door coupe, but that’s still an impressive amount of snow!

Places

If you don’t have one, you need to get something that is a solid head leveler.  You know, one of those things that can be your go-to activity that takes you away from it all and can really get your head back on straight.  A head leveler.   Mine is my bike.  There’s nothing like a good bike ride for me.  I’ve had cycling in my life now for over 30 years.  Through all of my ups and downs, I still have my bike.  I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t ride.  And a year ago I wasn’t so sure about it.  Glad I have it.  It take me places.

20160131-IMG_6031-HDR

I got this bike back in 1999 and absolutely love it.  It’s ironic that I’ve held onto this for so long when I’m the type who’s always in line to get the next best gadget.  It’s like a comfortable pair of jeans really.  It just fits right.

Anniversary

I was being rolled back to the OR exactly a year ago.  What a difference one year makes, huh?

Did You Miss It?

With all the commotion going on with the super storm of 2016/Snowmageddan/Jonas/Storm of the Year or whatever you want to call it, did you miss the full moon last night?  We saw it while we were watching The Shining on our sun porch which was surrounded by the blizzard.  Cool.

Leap Of Faith

I don’t really feel too bad about it.  After all, he’s been in snow before.  You’d think he’d have learned his lesson.

20160123-IMG_1982_104

He completely disappeared when he landed.  Bet he’s kinda mad at us.

Snow Day

How else should you spend the first bright snow day than with a visit to the eye doctor and massively dilated pupils?!

My daughter wanted to see how dilated her pupils were. #olliclip

#TB (Insert Day of the Week)

Wow, it’s been a long time.  Not that I’m lazy, but I’m going back through all my photos to see if I can dig up some good ones.  Someone recently gave me a great quote about what separates a pro from an amateur photographer.  Basically it come down to size matters.  Now, get your mind out of the gutter…

The size of their “trash can.”  Pros take a crap-load of photos and most are never seen by anybody.  In 2015 I shot 6478 “general” photos.  This figure doesn’t take into account all the paid gigs that my studio handled.  That would bump the number of images up to 29,925.  Still not an enormous number compared to a lot of pros, but when you factor in the fact that I only considered 90 good enough to post here, that’s a lot. A mere 3 tenths of a percent were deemed decent enough to represent my studio.

Wow, long story short, here’s one of those images that never made it here (at least I don’t think it did).

DJI04185

It was almost a year ago that we had our first snowfall and two weeks ago it was nearly 80 degrees!

Moonrise

I was out to shoot the full-moon rise, but it didn’t happen like I was expecting.  Never saw the moon, but I’ll take this just the same.

Underwhelmed

Did you ever purchase something based on the hype and the credibility of person pushing it?  I just did and so far I’m underwhelmed with the results.  I’m not giving up, I’m just saying it just may not be worth all the hype just yet – or at least, I’m not seeing it.

Meh. It's a decent photo, but not much different than what I've already been doing.

Folgers

Waking up early is no big thing when you know it’s gonna look like this.  It doesn’t matter what brand of coffee you drink, I still think this is the best part of waking up.

I Lied

Alright, so at the very last minute I really got going and created a pretty horrifying scene apparently.  It doesn’t hurt that I have a fairly professional lighting kit to dip into.  Plenty of kids came up the walk and immediately turned around after seeing our greeting.  I guess I’m still into Halloween.

This is what greeted the kids as the walked up the sidewalk to our house. It helps that the front door is somewhat removed from the street, Next year's gonna be awesome!
